Let's Go Bowling

Updated: Feb 20

I’m tired. I’m busy. I don’t know what to make tonight. If any of these statements hit home, you are not alone. My advice is to conjure up the face of Walter from The Big Lebowski and say, “F*ck it, Dude, let’s go bowling.”

By bowling, I mean making a bowl (or you can go bowling, I don’t care), sometimes known as a Buddha Bowl. Bowls are an easy go-to when time, energy and creativity are in short supply. I’ve definitely found myself in this situation: It’s time to eat, I have nothing prepared, I have nothing planned, I’m hungry and I don’t want to eat junk.

If you have a grain of some sort and a can of beans in your pantry, a vegetable or two in the fridge and a few condiments, chances are, you can put together a decent healthy bowl. You might end up feeling more creative than you expected, and you’ll have good clean energy after you eat it.

Here are my own personal basics:

Grains Brown Rice, Pasta, Quinoa, Barley, Couscous, Bulgar, Farro, Oats

Greens Spinach, Arugula, Mustard Greens, Bok Choy, Kale, Collards

Protein Beans, Chickpeas, Lentils, Tofu, Tempeh (I’m not a meat-eater, but this is the category where meat-eaters add a little somethin’ somethin’)

Veggies Whatever - usually sweet potatoes

Toppings Nuts, Seeds, Herbs and Spices

Sauce Hot sauce, Peanut Sauce, Vinaigrette, Salsa, Mustard, Tahini

But, hey man, make your own list! Take one of those magnets on your fridge and stick your list up there. Next time you’re in a culinary bind, don’t stress! Look at that list! You took the time to make that. Nice job! Take something from each category and make yourself a nice cozy bowl. F*ck it, Dude, let’s go bowling!

A Few Examples:

The High Brow

Quinoa + avocado + blueberries + walnuts + fennel + arugula topped with citrus dressing (orange juice, olive oil, vinegar, maple syrup + salt)

The B+

Brown rice + steamed broccoli + carrots + tofu chunks topped with peanut sauce + cilantro + sesame seeds + pepitas

The Grub

Rice + Black Beans + Leftovers? + Peanuts + Hot Sauce
